7 Mac Tips that a New User Should Know

Nowadays, more and more people choose to purchase a Mac rather than a computer with Windows operating system. And there are many reasons for that.

Mac computers have great speed, high performance; they are long-lasting, trustworthy, and come packed with amazing features. In fact, there are so many features that probably an experienced Mac user won’t ever know all of them.

Therefore, if you have just recently purchased a Mac, there are quite a few things you need to learn to use the computer more efficiently and prevent it from becoming slow.

Tip #1: Learn How to Copy Path

Learning how to copy path in mac early on will be useful in the future. As you use your Mac to download, copy, and create new files, over time, these files will accumulate new temporary files that will eventually pile up and take up storage space.

As Macs come with pretty small hard drives, you will learn that keeping up enough free disk space is not that easy, and it requires regular maintenance work.

Tip #2: Know How to Check Storage Space

Keeping up with the free storage space that you have left is important for a couple of reasons. First of all, as mentioned before, the hard drive of your Mac can fill up quickly; therefore, you need to know when it is time to delete some unneeded files.

Secondly, if you notice that the free disk space has dropped below 10%, your computer will probably become slow and start to underperform. To check storage space, click the Apple logo from the top menu, then choose About This Mac, and click on the Storage tab.

Tip #3: Know How to Create More Disk Space

In case your Mac’s storage space ever drops below 10%, you should know how to fix it fast. First of all, start by uninstalling apps you don’t use. To check how much disk space is used up by apps, go to the same Storage menu and click Manage.

Once you click Manage, you will see four suggestions that can help you with clearing up storage space. One of the suggestions is called Reduce Clutter, and it will guide you through large PDF files, media files, and other items that you may no longer need.

Also, you may consider storing some of your files on a cloud storage platform such as DropBox. This way, you get to keep your files and have more storage space on your Mac.

Tip #4: Start Using Spotlight Search

The Spotlight Search is a built-in tool that helps you find whatever you are searching for. Did you forget where you saved a file? Spotlight Search can help you with that. More to it, a lot of Mac users use this tool as a shortcut to open applications faster.

A less known way to use the Spotlight Search is for calculations and currency conversion. Using these tools instead of using a calculator or converting currency on Google will save you time.

Tip #5: Learn How to Take a Screenshot

There are many situations where you might need to take a screenshot, such as sharing some information with your colleagues. As macOS is packed with features, it has three different ways to take a screenshot.

Using the Shift + Command + 3 combination will take a screenshot of the whole screen. If instead of 3, you will click 4, you will be able to take a screenshot of a certain part of your screen. Using the Shift + Command + 5 combination will open an editor that includes both previously mentioned ways to take a screenshot.

Tip #6: Use Keyboard Shortcuts

You might have had a chance to see how an experienced Mac owner is using the computer, and the hands of that person are barely leaving the keyboard. This is because Mac has a lot of keyboard combinations.

By learning the Magic Keyboard combinations, you can do almost anything that you need to do, including editing the next, navigating to different browser tabs and applications.

Tip #7: Unlock Mac With Your Fingerprint

If you just purchased one of the latest models of Macs, you can use your fingerprints to unlock your computer. This way, you will be adding an additional level of security because no one else will be able to log in to your computer even if they knew all of your passwords. Fingerprints are something you will not guess and will not fake.

More to it, this will create very easy and quick access to your Mac for you. All you will have to do is place your finger on the power button, and the computer will automatically unlock.
